Trophy
Published in Hardcover by Century Hutchinson (December, 1989)
Author: Julian Jay Savarin
Average review score:

A darn good read!
" Just over 1600 kilometres to the south of Hamburg and a little eastwards, a pair of F-104S Starfighters belonging to the Aeronautica Militaire Italiana, the Italian Air force, were high over the Adriatic and curving round to head back to Rimini for a landing.

They had been engaging in a high altitude interception exercise with a pair of F-15 Eagles who were well on their way back to base, somewhat miffed. "

So begins chapter 4, and there follows a fascinating description of just how the Starfighters trounced the Eagles.

The book describes how German, American, Australian (ex F-111 navigator ), Italian and British pilots are formed into a new squadron flying the new improved ( fictional ?) Tornado ADV for NATO. A darn good read which manages to pack in a feast of aerial incidents.... engine fires, blown tires.... plenty of dogfighting and of course the famous Tornado terrain hugging flights.... highly recommended. In Truth Applied, Dr. Jay E. Adams takes the reader through the principles outlined in Scripture for applying truth to life. The author contends that too often preaching has become dry and useless to the listener, and gives the impression that the Bible has no place in daily living. Here Dr. Adams takes the preacher to Biblical principles for applying the Scriptures to the hearts and lives of believers in the Church. If your preaching has become dry or application is a struggle for you as you preach, this book needs to be a part of your library.

Truth in Government: Restoring Pride and Prosperity in America
Published in Paperback by Freedom Publishing (December, 1996)
Author: Jay H. Brown
Average review score:

An eye-opening book on government waste and political fraud
As someone who wasn't politically informed, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the title caught my eye. I'm really glad I read the book, because I feel much better informed about the political process, and am able to separate fact from opinion when I 'talk politics' with my friends and family. This book gives me the confidence to talk intelligently with anyone regarding politics, since I am now armed with a great deal of factual information. It's a great reference guide for relevant information on any political issue, from term limits, the budget, the debt, government waste, and the Truth.

ACW Battlefield Tour Bibles
These series of books are the best available resource for conducting ACW battlefield tours - assuming that your purpose in touring battlefields is to study and understand the applicable tactics, strategy and terrain and to develop an appreciation for the objectives and efforts of the participants. If you go to ACW battlefields to gawk and gossip as an everyday tourist then you do not need to study these guides. If you have an active interest in ACW history, military history in general or fascinating chapters in human history, then these guides are remarkable values, "Best Buys". Thorough but not intimidating, insightful and objective, with no deficiencies noted.

The Ultimate Book of Business Creativity: 50 Great Thinking Tools for Transforming your Business
Published in Paperback by Capstone Pub (22 February, 2001)
Author: Ros Jay
Average review score:

Great, practical overiew of creativity techniques
This book provides a clear, concise guide to creativity techniques. The introduction stresses the need for quantity to create quality when generating ideas. Each of the 50 techniques is outlined in a few pages with a clear focus on practical application. If you want a book with a lot of theory behind creativity this is not for you, but if you want to actually get started, this book can help (fast). The book covers both individual and group techniques and also categorises the techniques for either problem solving or idea generation. This book will prove very useful whether you are looking to improve your own creativity, or get the best out of others. Highly recommended.

Unbought Spirit: A John Jay Chapman Reader
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (October, 1998)
Authors: Richard Stone, John Jay Chapman, and Jacques Barzun
Average review score:

A welcome anthology of a neglected near-genius.
If John Jay Chapman is remembered at all these days, it is as an eccentric who once thrust his left hand into a coal fire in penance for mistakenly beating up a friend. This is as if Vincent Van Gogh were to be remembered only for cutting off one of his ears.Chapman was, in fact a brilliant and passionate writer in many genres, an unrelenting foe of social injustice, and a penetrating critic of American philstinism and materialism. The last anthology of Chapmans writings appeared in the late nineteen fifties , and was edited by Jacques Barzun, who has supplied a fine ,judicious introduction to the present collection.A welcome feature of the present volume is a selection of Chapmans unpublished letters--some of the finest everwritten. One of them includes one of the most brilliant and succinct analyses of Lincolns life and character that I have ever read. One can only hope that a Chapman revival will take place, and that someone will eventually get around to doiing similar anthologies for Sydney Smith or Albert Jay Nock.

The Understanding by Design Handbook
Published in Spiral-bound by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (01 July, 1999)
Authors: Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins
Average review score:

Essential to Understanding Understanding (that's no typo)
In order for us as educators to effectively assess our students, we must decipher how our students learn and understand.

That's essentially what McTighe and Wiggins help us do here. I also bought their textbook for a course I took in Assessment. It was fascinating.

This book, along with the textbook is very useful in Unit Planning and shows its readers how to effectively use the "backward design" technique. Teachers, I can only describe the technique as assessment the way WE think it should be.

This handbook is a step-by-step guide with tons of reproducibles.

Very useful find for planning the school year!

Understanding Isaiah
Published in Hardcover by Deseret Books (April, 1998)
Authors: Donald W. Parry, Jay A. Parry, and Tina M. Peterson
Average review score:

Understanding Isaiah Clarifies Isaiah
I have used Understanding Isaiah as a reference book now for the past six months and I love how it teaches the wonderful truths of the love that Jesus has for all. I read through the Bible passages and try to understand, but so many times there are refernces to the way of life of the Jews that I am not famliar with and Donald Perry beautifully explains the true meaning often going with a phrase by phrase dissection of each verse. One of the best qualities of Understanding Isaiah is placing the words of Isaiah in the original poetic form. That alone reveals a beauty within the words of the great prophet. Each explanation then uncovers the facets of a glorious gem just waiting to be understood by all who will just look to be more fully persuaded to believe in their Redeemer as another great prophet said.
